How to make a reusable Gift Wrap – The simplest Furoshiki gift wrapping. Free Tutorial.
There are many different ways of tying cloths around presents, and you will find some excellent demonstrations on Youtube. I also like to use ribbon to tie my gifts, especially when they are small as it can be difficult to securely tie a smaller pieced cloth. It is important these clothes are reused, so if you are not giving them to a fellow quilter you might like to add a label saying ‘please reuse me’. If you enjoy making them you can adapt different patchwork designs, although I advise pressing seams open as it helps the cloths to stay flat. The more seams you have the bulkier the cloth becomes and so it is harder it is to tie.
MATERIALS
Six fat eighths (or a selection of scraps)
One 10.2cm (4in) square of aqua fabric
90cm (1yd) lightweight fabric (such as lawn) for the backing
Ribbon for tying (optional)
FINISHED SIZE
Large approx. 56cm (22in) square
Medium approx. 38cm (15in) square
Small approx. 20.25cm (8in) square
PREPARATION
All measurements include ¼in seam allowance. Press all seams open.
Cutting instructions
Below is the order Elizabeth cut her fabrics, however, if you are using scraps she advises cutting the larger pieces first, then working through the pieces to cut the smallest ones last. This way you can get as much out of your scraps as possible. To help with fabric placement, lay them on a surface as you cut them to see how the design is looking.
1 From the light gold fabric cut:
• One 3½in square
• Two 1½ x 2½in rectangles
• Two 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• One 9½in square
• Two 3½ x 4½in rectangle
2 From the dark gold fabric cut:
• One 1½ x 2½in rectangle
• One 2½in square • One 6½in square
• One 9½in square
• Two 3½ x 4½in rectangle
3 From the turquoise fabric cut:
• One 3½in square
• Three 1½ x 2½in rectangles
• One 6½in square
• Three 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• Two 3½ x 4½in rectangle
• One 4½ in square
4 From the silver fabric cut:
• One 3½in square
• Two 1½ x 2½in rectangles
• Three 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• One 9½in square
5 From the off-white fabric cut:
• One 3½in square
• One 1½ x 2½in rectangle
• One 6½in square
• Two 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• Four 3½ x 4½in rectangles
6 From the pink fabric cut:
• Three 1½ x 2½in rectangles
• One 6½in square
• Two 3½ x 4½in rectangles
• Two 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• One 9½in square
7 From the aqua fabric cut:
• One 3½in square
8 When you have finished cutting the pieces place them in three piles in the following order:
For the large cloth:
• Four 9½in squares
• Twelve 3½ x 4½in rectangles
• One 4½in square
For the medium cloth:
• Four 6½in squares
• Twelve 2½ x 3½in rectangles
• One 3½in square
For the small cloth:
• Four 3½in squares
• Twelve 1½ x 2½in rectangles
• One 2½in square
9 From the backing fabric cut:
• One 22½in square
• One 15½in square
• One 8½in square
Making the medium cloth
1 Following Fig 1 lay out the pieces on a surface, right side up.
2 Take the three rectangles that go between the top two squares and sew them together. Repeat with the three rectangles between the bottom squares. Fig 2
3 Sew a large square to the end of strip of sewn rectangles. Fig 3
4 Sew the middle row of rectangles together, stitching the square in the middle. Fig 4
5 Sew the three rows together, press and remove any stray threads. Fig 5
6 Lay the pieced square on top of the 15½in square of backing fabric. Pin all the way around, making sure the pieced square is flat. Sew around the edge, leaving a 3in gap in the middle of one side for turning through.
7 Trim the excess fabric at the corners and turn through the gap. Press well, then hand stitch the opening closed.
8 Topstitch around the cloth, approximately ⅛in in from the sides.
Making the small cloth
Follow instructions above, but use the 8½in square of backing fabric and leave a turning gap approximately 2in wide.
Making the large cloth
Follow instructions above, but use the 22½in square of backing fabric and leave a turning gap approximately 5in wide.
