REQUIREMENTS
– 50cm Indigo Shadow Solid Smooth Denim
– 3, Fat eighth matching prints
– 50cm Lining
– 50cm Fusible fleece e.g. Vlieseline H630
– 6″ Metal zipper
– 4m Cotton cord – drawstrings
– 3″ x 7″ leather – tabs and hanging loop
CUTTING
Cut across width of fabric
1. From denim cut:
one, 14¼” x 16″ rectangle,
one, 6″ x 5½” rectangle,
one, 6″ x 6¼” rectangle,
two, 4½” x 11¼” rectangles,
one, 2″ x 14¼” strip.
2. From lining cut:
two, 14¼” x 16″ rectangles,
two, 3½” x 13¾” strips,
one, 6″ x 5½” rectangle,
one, 6″ x 7¾” rectangle.
3. From fat eighths cut total of:
nine, 2″ x 4″ rectangles,
two, 3½” x 13¾” strips.
4. From leather cut:
two, ¾” x 4″ strips,
one, ¾” x 6″ strip.
5. From fusible fleece interfacing cut:
one, 14¼” x 16″ rectangle,
one, 6″ x 5½” rectangle,
one, 6″ x 6¼” rectangle,
two, 4½” x 11¼” rectangles.
METHOD
Use ¼” seam allowance throughout
PREPARE OUTER BAG
1. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and iron fusible fleece pieces to wrong side of denim rectangles for outer bag and pocket pieces.
2a. Take 2″ x 4″ rectangles and join pieces together along longest edge to make one long pieced strip.
b. Press seams open.
c. Add 2″ x 14¼” denim strip to bottom edge of joined rectangles.
3a. Lay joined pieces on top of fusible fleece and trim fleece to fit.
b. Iron fusible fleece to wrong side of pieces.
c. Stitch two lines of topstitching along top edge of denim strip, illust. 1.
POCKET
1a. Place 6″ x 5½” denim rectangle right side up on your work surface and lay 6″ x 5½” lining rectangle on top, right sides together.
b. Sandwich zipper between rectangles, illust. 2a.
c. Sew along zipper
d. Flip layers right side out, press and topstitch twice along top edge of panel, illust. 2b.
2a. Place lower part of pocket onto 6″ x 7¾” lining rectangle, aligning bottom edge and sides.
b. Pin and baste sides and bottom edge, illust. 2c.
c. Pin 6″ x 6¼” denim rectangle right sides together with pocket pieces and stitch along second edge of zipper, illust. 2d.
d. Flip panel right sides out and topstitch twice along edge to complete pocket section, illust. 2e.
FRONT
1a. Take 4½” x 11¼” denim rectangles and join one rectangle to each side of pocket section.
b. Topstitch edges twice as before, illust. 3.
c. Add pieced strip section to bottom edge of pocket section and topstitch edges to complete front of backpack.
DRAWSTRING CASINGS
1a. Take one, 3½” x 13¾” print strip and place it right sides together with one, 3½” x 13¾” lining strip.
b. Sew short ends of strips only, illust. 4a.
c. Repeat with remaining pair of strips.
2a. Turn strips right sides out and press ends so they are neat.
b. Fold each casing in half along its length and baste along bottom edge, illust. 4b.
ASSEMBLY
1a. Take 14¼” x 16″ denim rectangle and find centre of top edge. Make a mark.
b. Take ¾” x 6″ leather strip and fold strip in half. Position folded strip so that ends of strip are flat on either side of centre mark.
c. Baste strip in position, illust. 5a.
2. Find centre of one casing and matching centre marks, join casing to back panel.
3. Attach second casing to front panel of backpack in same way.
4a. Measure 1½” in on bottom edge of back panel and attach one, ¾” x 4″ leather strip, illust. 5b.
b. Add remaining ¾” x 4″ leather strip to opposite bottom corner in same way.
5a. Place bag front right sides together with bag back and pin edges.
b. Stitch sides and bottom edge.
6.
Place 14¼” x 16″ lining rectangles right sides together and join sides
and bottom edges together in similar manner but leave a turning gap on
bottom edge.
7a. Turn outer bag right side out and with lining wrong
side out, pull lining on over outer bag so that pieces are right sides
together. Cord casings will be tucked down in between outer bag and
lining.
b. Sew around top edge leaving no gaps.
c. Turn bag right sides out through turning gap.
d. Slipstitch opening closed.
8. Push lining down into bag and topstitch around top edge of backpack twice, illust. 5c.
9a.
Cut cotton cord into two equal lengths and thread one piece through
casings one way and thread second piece through casings in opposite
direction, illust. 6a.
b. Secure drawstrings at bottom edge of backpack using leather tabs to anchor them, illust. 6b.
